Our campaign about peace of mind for the two sides of the tenancy agreement (i.e. landlords/ladies and tenants) continues this week by looking at what can create and maintain peace of mind for renters in 2022.
Indeed, it is known that COVID-19 and its current variants (like Delta and Omicron) do not make things easy to have peace of mind for everybody, including renters or tenants. However, there are small things that renters can do to feel safe and protected in their rented properties.
Little things that can create and maintain peace of mind for renters
Peace of mind could mean a variety of things. In the context of this campaign, we have identified six elements we believe they can create and maintain peace of mind for renters in 2022. These elements or creators of peace of mind include the following: trust, patience, approach to complaints, execution of contractual obligations, property care and dispute resolution.
The first creator of peace of mind is renters to develop the mind of trust or trusted mind with their new or existing landlords/ladies. To feel safe and protected in landlords’/ladies’ property, renters need to have a trusted mind.
It is difficult to trust somebody in new relationship (like a property rental one), but as renters you need to develop this relationship of trust if you want to have peace of mind in somebody’s property. This relationship of trust can have some consequences or implications later when renters need a reference from their current or previous landlords/ladies to move to another property or to take up a new job from potential employers. Renters may want their current or previous landlords/ladies to confirm that they are trustworthy persons.
Learning to be patient can sometimes help you earn a good prize for your peace of mind. For example, if your landlords/ladies tell you they will carry out some work in the property you are living in order to improve your living conditions, there is no need to rush them unless the work is life-saving. Being patience could sometimes help in some ways (e.g. Landlords/ladies could do the work at the time that suits both of you, with the right professionals and during the right weather or season of the year).
3) Approach to complaints
It could easy to complain regarding the issues of safety and protection in any property. However, before making any complaint about the conditions of the property, it is always good to check the facts and the contents of your complaint for your peace of mind. You could be asking more than what it has been agreed or provided by the terms and conditions of your rental contract. If your complaint sits on unfounded facts or elements or unjustified demands, your peace of mind could be negatively affected.
4) Mind your contractual obligations
It is not enough to sign a tenancy agreement or just to say you know what to do as a tenant. You need to keep your side of the bargain or agreement as a tenant or renter in terms of contractual obligations. In practical terms, you need to apply those contractual obligations for your peace of mind. Otherwise, if you fail your obligations, this could be a matter of breaching a tenancy agreement. It means that you fail to deliver in a binding tenancy agreement.
5) Property care
Peace of mind is also about looking after your rental property as you would like someone else cares for your assets. It is all about showing responsibility by maintaining and caring about your rental home, landlords’/ladies’ property. If you were a landlord/lady would not like renters to mistreat your property. You would want them to show some responsibility on this matter.
6) Skilful and peaceful dispute resolution
It is advisable to use soft skills to peacefully resolve difficult matters with your landlords/ladies as soft skills can soften relationships with your landlords/ladies. Likewise, it is better to choose a peaceful drive to deal with problems with landlords/ladies rather than using aggressive or conflicting approaches. Resolving disputes skilfully, peacefully and legally is the best way to nurture peace of mind as renters.
The above creators of peace of mind are not the only that can be useful for renters. They could be more. What is important is that they give some indication on what can create and maintain peace of mind for renters as far as property rental and management are concerned.
